[ARCHIVED] Message from Bedford City Manager Jimmy Stathatos Regarding Locked Water Meter Boxes

Water Meter Access Update

As you may know, a few years ago, the City had a lock placed on every water meter box. This caused the “shut-off valve” that’s inside the meter box to be inaccessible to our residents. According to “Sec. 118-3. – Illegal water connections; theft of water” of the City’s Code of Ordinances, I am hereby providing blanket written permission for Bedford residents and businesses to forego having their meter box locked. Residents who want to remove the lock themselves are encouraged to use a proper tool so that there isn’t any damage done to the meter box. Residents who would like the City’s assistance to help with unlocking the meter box will be encouraged to contact the City at 817-952-2127. However, due to the numerous public safety and public works issues that our employees are currently dealing with, the meter boxes will be unlocked as time permits. Residents who are experiencing a water emergency will be given priority status.

Moving forward, we will recommend a formal amendment to the Code so the locking requirement can be removed. To download a pdf copy of this memo can do so at https://bedfordtx.gov/DocumentCenter/View/4746/City-Manager-Water-Meter-Letter.
