On Monday, May 8, the City of Bedford purchased the former YMCA property, located at 3524 Central Dr., with the intention of turning it into an amenity for residents.
While the Mayor and Council Members have publicly spoken about turning the facility into a senior center, the Mayor and City Council will formally declare the building’s future use at a June Council Meeting as part of a measure that involves the property.
Now that the City owns the building and property, City staff estimate it will take several months of construction time to make improvements with a tentative completion date late fall/winter 2023 (we cannot stress this enough, this is an early optimistic estimate).
Currently, City staff members are working with an architect to develop plans outlining the building’s current conditions, identifying load bearing walls, and determining what can and can’t be moved to convert the building into a senior center. Based on this information, the City will then gain feedback from the senior community to determine wants and needs for the facility, ultimately arriving at a final plan for improvements for the building and property.
We will continually share updates on this project throughout the process to keep the community informed.
