Renter’s Rights and When to Contact the City

Do you rent an apartment or home in Bedford? You have the right to live in a safe and secure home! The City’s Neighborhood Services (Code Enforcement) Division can assist residents leasing apartments or homes with situations affecting one’s physical health or safety, if there is enough evidence showing the property management or landlord is not diligently working to resolve the issue within a reasonable time.

A “reasonable time” is defined as the time it would take a reasonable person to repair or replace the item – or provide a written explanation of the delay on or before the fifth day after receiving the tenant’s repair request.

Some of these situations include, but are NOT LIMITED TO, no air conditioning or heat, no hot water, roof leaks, sewage backups, faulty wiring, pest infestation, inoperable smoke detectors, and inoperable locks and/or security devices.

For a more complete list of circumstances, please visit the Renter's Rights webpage. If you have questions, please email Neighborhood Services or call 817-952-2640.
