1. What are Bedford's water restrictions?

The City lifted Stage 1 water restrictions. However, watering is limited between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. each day.

3. What are the codes for placement of garbage and recycling bins for collection?

To dispose of limbs and branches, please make sure that they are cut no longer than 4 feet, tied, and bundled. The bundles must not weigh over 50 pounds. You can place these bundles out with your trash. Call Republic Servicees if you have an extra large amount to be picked up that day.

The local trash service will also collect, at no additional charge:

• Appliances
• Household/bedroom furniture
• Kitchen items
• Refrigerators or A/C units (proof of CFC/Freon removal must be affixed to the unit)
• Water heaters

This additional service is provided only when residents call Republic Services and request service.

The following items will not be picked up:

• Building materials
• Dirt
• Hazardous waste items
• Oil filters
• Rock
• Tires

4. Do I need a permit to have a garage sale? Where can I place garage sale signs?

Yes, a permit is required for a garage sale, but there is no cost, and individuals may use their own signs (no larger than four square feet, with a maximum height of three feet). Garage sale signs can only be placed on private property within 24 hours of the sale, and must be removed within 24 hours after the conclusion of the sale. 

Each residence is allowed to have a maximum of four garage sales per year, up to three days maximum per sale.

5. Do I need a permit to install a water heater?

Installation of a water heater requires a permit. Installation may be done by a homeowner or a plumber registered with the City and licensed by the State of Texas.

6. Do I need a permit to build a storage building or fence?

New accessory buildings and fences require a permit. Accessory buildings may not be located in the front or side yard.

7. What do I do if I have a common fence and the neighbors do not want to pay their portion to repair or replace it?

The upkeep of common fences separating private properties are the responsibility of each property owner. However, in many cases, one of the property owners cannot or will not share in the financial or physical responsibility for the project. In cases such as this, it would become a civil matter between the respective property owners, and they would have to pursue this matter without City involvement in the dispute.

8. How do I dispose of tires, anti-freeze and batteries?

To dispose of your old tires, anti-freeze, batteries and oil, contact your local auto parts store for more details.

9. How do I dispose of old paint?

If your old paint is water-based: place in a dry area, remove the lid, and let it dry. Leave the lid off so that the local trash service can see that it is dried up. If your old paint is oil-based: mix with oil absorb or kitty litter, to make a thick paste. Leave the lid off so that the local trash service can see that it is mixed well. Hazardous materials vouchers can also be used to dispose of paint.

10. How do I dispose of hazardous material?

Residents of Bedford may take their hazardous household waste items to the Fort Worth Environmental Collection Center free of charge with a voucher from Customer Service (Water Billing Department). Residents must obtain a Bedford ECC program voucher before taking waste to the collection center. Please present proof of residency, such as a recent water bill, to receive your voucher.

Examples of household hazardous waste include:

• Fluorescent light bulbs
• Batteries: lead acid, alkaline, nicad
• Paint (latex and oil base), paint thinners
• Oil, solvents, pesticides, herbicides, petroleum-based lubricants, gasoline, antifreeze, cleaners (acidic and basic), ethylene glycol
• Pool chemicals
• Empty propane and helium tanks

Each free voucher to a resident costs the City of Bedford $50, whether someone brings a single item or a truckload (20 gallons of paint limit) so residents are encouraged to make the most of their trip.  Please note: there is a 20-gallon-of-paint limit per voucher.

11. What is the difference between homeowners association (HOA) regulations and City regulations, and which regulations control?

The difference between HOA regulations (set forth in deed restrictions and covenants) and City regulations (set forth in the City’s Code of Ordinances) can be a matter of the particular content of the regulation, a matter of enforcement of the particular regulation, or both. The general rule is that both sets of regulations are applicable to the property.

Enforcement of HOA regulations is performed by the appropriate HOA committee or board, as specified in the deed restrictions and covenants, and is a civil matter between the property owner and HOA. Enforcement of City regulations is performed by City staff, and can involve penalties through Municipal Court proceedings.
