The Center

Aerial view of The Center in August 2022The Center (operated by the YMCA), located at 2801 Forest Ridge Dr., is both a multi-generational and multi-functional facility set to open fall 2022.

The City is hoping to take possession of the facility from the contractor in November. At that time, the City will allow the YMCA staff to move in and put the finishing touches on the facility which will take 2-3 weeks. Right now, the City estimates The Center will have a soft opening in mid-December, depending upon supply chain issues. The City is planning a grand opening ceremony for the entire Generations Park at Boys Ranch project in January. As opening dates are finalized, they will be posted on all City communication channels.

The Indoor Aquatic Facility has two slides, lap lanes, therapeutic hot tub, handicapped lift, current lap lane, and children's play feature. Chaise lounges and tables will also be located on the pool deck. Adjacent to the indoor aquatic facility is four reservable party rooms, each equipped with tables, chairs, a refrigerator, sink, and TV monitors, as well as an outdoor porch which opens to the outdoor aquatic facility. Across the hall from the indoor aquatic facility is a full-featured men and womens locker room, which also serves the gymnasium. The locker room includes showers, lockers, restrooms, and suit spinners. In addition, there are four family changing rooms.

The gymnasium is comprised of a double basketball court which will also have striping for pickleball and volleyball. The gym includes bleachers, as well as an observation counter complete with USB charging ports. Down the hall are two fitness rooms which include an operable partition to allow the space to expand to one large space. The rooms include ballet barres and mirrored walls, as well as TV monitors. Adjacent to the fitness rooms is an outdoor fitness porch and an outdoor basketball court, which is also striped for multiple court activities.

The second-floor fitness mezzanine includes an indoor track, exercise equipment, TV monitors, and free weights. The fitness mezzanine is serviced by an elevator and stairs.

The Center includes a Kids Watch room for short-term child care. This room includes reading nooks, active game spaces, an outdoor porch, movie wall, and many games and activities, as well as a restroom for the use of its participants only. At the reception desk, members can purchase snacks and swag, as well as check out paddles and pool cues for the games lounge. The facility includes a large community room with TV monitors, a podium, and banquet seating for over 250 guests. The community room also includes operable partitions to segment the rooms into three spaces. With large windows overlooking the lake, the room includes built-in serving counters and a pass-through window to the catering kitchen, which features large catering refrigerators, warming ovens, microwaves, commercial coffee makers, and other amenities to service functions.

In addition, The Center includes three activity rooms for programs and activities. These rooms each include a sink and cabinetry, as well as countertops, tables, and chairs. Two rooms have an operable partition to create a large room as needed, and one room includes a kiln and ceramics storage. Outside the activity rooms, there will be a games lounge with a fireplace and pool table, as well as games tables and soft seating. There is an attached patio to the large partitioned room which will provide outdoor seating, in addition to a special events entry directly to the community room.

YMCA to Operate The Center

During the May 10, 2022  City Council meeting, the Mayor and Council Members unanimously approved a measure authorizing the City Manager to enter into an agreement with the YMCA of Fort Worth to operate The Center recreational facility. By moving forward with the YMCA, it will save the City of Bedford approximately $600,000, expand programming choices, help reduce membership rates, and provide financial assistance options to members.

The Council and staff explored the potential of a partnership with an outside agency to operate the Center for several months prior to the decision. In January, the Council held Town Hall-style meetings for the YMCA to present detailed information about what to expect from a potential partnership and for community members to ask questions. Following the meetings, the City began a formal Request for Proposal (RFP) process soliciting bids from organizations, like the YMCA, interested in potentially operating the Center. The YMCA of Metropolitan Fort Worth was the only one to respond to the RFP.
